2024 Boys Wrestling Finalists
Brysen Wessell
Jackson
Just a sophomore, Wessell impressed this season with the Jackson Indians. Wessell reached the 40-win plateau and only suffered eight defeats while doing so. Wessell finished second place in the Class 4 District 1 Tournament, good enough to earn the opportunity to compete at the Class 4 State Tournament. Upon reaching the state tournament, Wessell made it to the consolation semifinal before being defeated. Just a sophomore this season, Wessell is a force to continue his success during his next two years of eligibility and is sure to continue to improve on his successful season.
Landon Vassalli
Jackson
Vassalli was once again outstanding for the Jackson Indians. He compiled a dominating record of 42-8 this season and finished fifth at the Class 4 State Meet. During his career at Jackson, Vassalli earned all-state honors three different times. With his high school career completed, Vassalli will now look to continue his wrestling career at the collegiate level. During his career, he amassed a record of 149-26 and he is also one of only two Jackson wrestlers to win a gold medal in the 36-team Thrasher tournament at Francis Howell High School.
Kamden Gerhardt
Jackson
Also a sophomore, Gerhardt was a key contributor for the Jackson Indians this season. Gerhardt finished the season with a record of 38-12, including an impressive third-place finish at the SEMO Conference Tournament. Gerhardt also qualified for the Class 4 State Tournament by placing fourth at the Class 4 District 1 meet. At the state meet, Gerhardt reached the consolation semifinal before being eliminated. WIth two years of eligibility remaining, look for Gerhardt to continue his success into next season and beyond.
Davarious Nunley
Cape Central
Nunley’s senior year with the Cape Central Tigers was certainly a successful one. Nunley racked up a record of 27-12 over the course of the season and even made a trip to the Class 3 state meet. In order to reach the state meet, Nunley finished fourth at the Class 3 District 1 meet. Once at the state meet, Nunley finished with a record of 2-2. Some other highlights for Nunley include a second-place finish at the DeSoto Tournament a second place finish at the SEMO Conference Tournament and a second-place finish at the Farmington Scramble.
Charlie West
Notre Dame
Despite only wrestling for two years, Charlie West reached the Class 1 State Meet twice. He did so again this season by once again winning the Class 1 District 1 meet. During the season, West earned a record of 37-4 along the way, helping pace the Bulldogs. After winning his opening match at the state meet, West was defeated, but not without a fight as the senior closed the book on his wrestling career. West also won the DeSoto Tournament, finished third at the SEMO Conference Tournament and won the Brentwood Invitational over the course of the season.
Logan Hite
Poplar Bluff
Poplar Bluff senior Logan Hite finished his regular season with a 42-3 record, placed third in the districts, won first in the Bring The Hammer Tournament, and won the 190lb SEMO conference championship to become the first-ever male in Poplar Bluff’s 51-year wrestling history to win three conference championships.
Connor Henderson
New Madrid County Central
Henderson capped off a strong junior season at the Class 1 State Meet, placing sixth in the 175-pound weight class. He finished the season with a record of 30-11. Henderson also secured a third-place finish at the Class 1, District 1 Meet.
Caleb Moore
New Madrid County Central
Moore battled his way to a strong finish at the Class 1 State Meet, securing sixth place in the 113-pound weight class. The sophomore wrestled his way to a 33-5 record, showcasing his relentless drive on the mat. Moore’s impressive run included a decisive victory at the Class 1, District 1 Meet, where he claimed the gold medal.
Jax Lancaster
Sikeston
Lancaster punched his ticket to the Class 3 State Meet in the 157-pound weight class, battling through tough competition. He persevered throughout the season, amassing a 33-13 record. The senior also had a strong third-place finish at the Class 3, District 1 Meet.
Jack Ernest
Poplar Bluff
Jack Ernest finished the regular season with a 29-11 record and placed third in the district tournament. He earned All-Conference by placing sixth in the 2023 SEMO conference, finished third in the Union wrestling tournament, and kicked off the year by placing second in the 175lb weight class in the Bolivar tournament.
