2023 Sportsmanship Finalists
John Paul Sauer
Jackson
Sauer exemplified great sportsmanship in the 2023 baseball season, becoming one of the premier pitchers in the state of Missouri, earning both All-State and All-Conference honors en route to Jackson’s third-place finish in the MSHSAA Class 6 state tournament. John-Paul plays in memory of his two parents, John-Paul Sauer IV and Sheila Sauer.
Abby Morrison
Oak Ridge
On top of being a two-sport athlete at Oak Ridge, Morrison was also the manager of the baseball team, lifting her team up and cheering them on whether it was on the floor or sitting the bench. She always showed up for all the “extras” including little kids camp, after school tutoring, and all the concession stand fundraising she could without a single complaint.
Chase Venable
Scott City
Scott City coaches say Venable is the classic example of a kid that does the right thing when no one is looking. Venable has never acted unsportsmanlike in any way, is always respectful of everyone and played a leading roll on the football team and baseball team reaching the state tournament.
Samuel Tyler
Sikeston
Despite being born without hands and feet, he has become a remarkable athlete and a shining example of perseverance. Tyler’s determination to take on any challenge knows no bounds. Whether it is wrestling, running, water skiing, martial arts or playing the drums, he embraces every opportunity to show what he’s capable of.
Libbey Callis
Holcomb
Callis overcame an almost year-long recovery of an injury her sophomore year all while cheering her teams on every step of the way. She then went on to lead her teams both on and off the field and court as a 3-sport athlete, including leading the volleyball team to a sectional and district championship.
